Kayak Paddling and Building Videos!

New! Tippecanoe Kayak

This video includes fantastic paddling footage and a sped-up look at the fun building process of this full-size wooden kayak. This great new kayak kit is now available from Tippecanoe Boats! A fast and beautiful kayak that weighs just over 14.5 pounds!

Will Lesh has been building and paddling kayaks ever since he was fifteen years old. This new design is Will's concept of what the perfect sport kayak should be like. First and most important is the light weight. Who wants to carry a 30 pound kayak - or paddle a 30 pound kayak? The open cockpit is ideal for making it easy to step in and sit down - and, at the end of paddling, to climb out. The bow of the kayak is flared out to roll the water back on either side of the boat in a graceful wave so the bow deck stays almost totally dry even when paddling in choppy waves. Any water or spray that does get on deck is split by the coaming and does not get in the cockpit. An optional spray skirt is available but is hardly ever necessary due to the flared out bow design.

This highly engineered design takes advantage of the most advanced super-materials together with the remarkable properties of wood. Carbon-fiber uni-directional ribbons add super-strength and light weight reinforcing on the inside. A thick kevlar lamination on the inside provides strength and abrasion resistance where you step into the cockpit and sit. An ultra-light 1.4 ounce fiberglass cloth on the outside of the hull provides hardness and abrasion resistance to the hull. Only through the combination of these super high-tech materials and the finest quality wood are we able to produce such a remarkably strong and light kayak!
